Mobile Telecommunications Network, MTN became the first telecom in Ghana to launch an mobile apps competition in Ghana. The biggest carrier in Ghana had recognized the growing developer community in Ghana and thought the time was more than right to acknowledge this group by providing an avenue for such groups to submit innovative and locally relevant apps. The event attracted a spectrum of interested groups which included developers, software entrepreneurs, industry experts, artistes and media practitioners was launched Tuesday 13th August.
The need to solve problems in our society and to meet the needs of individuals using technology and innovation birthed the idea of the MTN Apps Challenge.
The aim of this competition is to bring together app developers, animators and Tech enthusiasts to create projects geared towards revolutionizing the Ghanaian digital landscape.
Earlier this year, MTN announced the winners of the MTN Apps Challenge 4.0. The next edition, Version 5.0 was launched at the MTN Media Centre today.
Kojo Akoto Boateng of Citi FM started with a lively interaction with guests present. Guests included media personnel, developers, past contestants, judges and former winners ET AL.
Winner from the previous version, Edem Morny of Amatsii App gave details of the journey of Amatsii through the various stages to win the grand price. According to him, joining the MTN Apps Challenge in itself gives you the needed confidence and exposure.
Also, Ethel Cofie and Alain Gbeasor, two of the judges for Version 5.0 drummed home the point that this edition will promote gender diversity and commercial viability.
In his speech, Asher Khan, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN said “We believe that given the right platform and opportunities, local app developers are bound to succeed beyond expectation, and this is one of the Drivers of the MTN Apps Challenge.”
David Narh, head of Innovations at MTN concluded with a presentation detailing how past editions have gone and what we should expect in the Version 5.0. “In all, We hope to improve the gender balance inMTN Apps ChallengeVersion 5.0″ he said.
The MTN Apps Challenge Roadshow begins from Dec 5, and participants given on Entrepreneurship, IoT, IP Rights, MobileMoney, Network Infrastructure, and MTN Play.
